I've seen your files . . .
It's like breaking

It was a few weeks ago and I was swinging away like mad trying to get projects completed before heading out of town for the Photoshop World Conference (produced by the National Association of Photoshop Professionals) in Orlando, followed by a photo safari & vacation through Florida. Upon returning from lunch I found a very pleasant surprise in my inbox. Two messages with the subject: Guru Finalist. Here's why this made my day (from the conference website):
The Guru Awards are a special Photoshop competition just for conference attendees of Photoshop World, and were created to honor and recognize the design, photography, retouching, and creativity of our attendees. Since their humble beginnings in 1999, the Guru Awards have now become the most prestigious and coveted awards in the international digital imaging industry.
From all of the entries they receive from around the world they choose three finalists in each of seven categories. The emails were telling me that two of the three finalists in the Commercial category were from my three submissions! That still brings a smile to my face – and thankfulness to my heart. Winners receive a very nice engraved award (like the one shown above) and finalists receive a certificate – suitable for framing as they say.
During the award ceremony at the end of the opening keynote, they followed "And the Guru goes to . . ." with my name! I have now won a Guru in the Commercial category four times, and had other work chosen as a finalist five times. As I told my wife when I called to share the good news, "Is God just ridiculously good to me or what?"
Without further ado, here are the pieces that were honored (you can click each one to open a larger version in a separate window). The Finalist was the cover of a corporate identity folder designed for Fairchild Communications:
And the Guru went to a global branding montage developed for 3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety for their safety eyewear segment. Here's that piece:
For both designs, creating these kinds of multi-layered collages is a labor of love. Each represents probably as much experimentation that doesn't make it into the final piece as what does. I'm richly blessed, not only by the recognition, but by the ongoing opportunities to create this kind of work.
Very excited to dust off the shelf for another one of these!
