I looked out this morning and the sun was gone Turned on some music to start my day I lost myself in a familiar song I closed my eyes and I slipped away I DO loves me some Boston! Their first album sold like a kajillion copies and was the best selling debut album of all time until those Guns-n-Roses punks came along. I had this masterpiece on vinyl LP and wore out the needle on it (in between cave paintings and skinning the mammoths, of course). Music often makes an emotional connection with us but much of the time it's just ear candy. Occasionally though, a song will really resonate with us–going beyond just producing a feeling. It transcends music altogether and comes to represent something to us–or perhaps even about us. Well, the other night Kelly and I were watching TV together when this :30 commercial came on:
Immediately after it ended Kelly said "Now THAT makes me want to buy Tide!" Tide had just transcended laundry detergent. They added a new wrinkle (so to speak) to their entire brand promise–the words "we care". They looked beyond the desired "call to action" of their target audience (pick up some Tide at the store) and into the area of how they could truly make a difference in their lives–and that meant looking past the bottom line. And if you poke around YouTube you'll find that the Tide Loads of Hope campaign didn't just stop at doing some laundry. They also helped rebuild houses–transcending themselves completely since that has nothing at all to do with laundry. Think Tide created some brand evangelists in the Gulf Coast? And yes, I went online and bought a Tide vintage T-shirt to aid the cause. How about you? Is there a song that has transcended ear candy for you? And what are some other ways brands can transcend themselves to connect deeper with an audience? Do you have a personal example? Post a comment - would love to hear about it!
Song? Delbert McClinton..."I used to worry"
Well, I used to worry where all my money had gone
'Til I wound up with nothin' to spend my money on
I used to guard my time like diamonds and pearls
'Til I wound up with nothing but all the time in the world
Just to think I used to worry about things like that
I used to worry 'bout rich and skinny 'til I would up poor and fat
Now days I kind of worry where my mind's been at
Just to think I used to worry about things like that
Brand? I'm stumped on that one this morning...give me some more coffee.

Stop speaking truth into my life so early in the week!
Love this song too! It's a good challenge for me to move from this being ear candy to being transcendent to the point where I practice it's message.
